Wanting to impress and be liked by classmates Aru Shah manages to awaken an ancient demon who will awaken the God of Destruction to destroy the world. She is joined by a companion, Mini, and together they embark on a quest to stop the demon.
The story explores Hindu mythology. While I am not familiar with Hindu mythology, Roshani Chokshi does an incredible job introducing and describing each God. There is a helpful glossary in the back of the book that helps with pronunciations and while reading there were some charming passages found there.
Aru Shah is the 12-year-old main character who lies a lot. She uses her imagination to embellish her own situation to be liked by her classmates who are wealthier than she is. She is thrust in a situation that she never thought possible and soon has to make tough decisions. While I was not able to connect with Aru I am interested to see how she will develop. Mini reminds Aru of her own isolation with her peers and shows Aru know there are more meaningful connections to be made. The sisterly bond that forms between them is endearing. Together they both bring a level of sass despite their dire situations.
The quest Aru and Mini embark on is action packed and full of creepy demons. I thought all the events that unfolded were told at a good place. The story did not feel rushed at all and there are so many elements left open to be explored in the next book. While the antagonist does want to destroy the world there is an interesting backstory given to him that makes me want to see more of how Aru and her friends will overcome him.
I am very curious to see what will happen in the next book.
